A Guide to Naturalizing Semantics

چکیده
Semantic predicates is true, refers, is about, has the truth conditional content that p and so forthapply to various items, most centrally to natural language expressions and to mental states and events (types and tokens). For example, both the sentence "The cat is crying" and the belief that the cat is crying are about the cat and possess the truth conditional content that the cat is crying. It is generally (and correctly) held that the semantic properties of natural language expressions (and other non-mental representations) are derived from the semantic properties of mental states. According to one version of this view natural language expressions obtain their semantic properties from conventions governing their use. These conventions are themselves explained in terms of regularities involving the beliefs, intentions, and so forth of speakers of the language. In the following I will assume that some such view is correct and focus on the semantic properties of mental states and events.

Naturalizing as an error-type in Biology
Biologists make mistakes – but they can also find them and remedy them. I survey a series of cases where idealizations and assumptions about normality have shaped common erroneous biological concepts: male and female; developmental abnormalities; competition in evolution; and laws of nature. Such scientific interpretations of nature can have profound social consequences. Identifying such recurr...
متن کاملNaturalizing Self-Consciousness
The crucial problem of self-consciousness is how to account for knowing self-reference without launching into a regress or without presupposing self-consciousness rather than accounting for it (circle). In the literature we find two bottom-up proposals for solving the traditional problem: the postulation of nonconceptual forms of self-consciousness and the postulation of a pre-reflexive form of...
متن کاملNaturalism and transcendentalism in the naturalization of phenomenology
In this article, an account is given of the relation between naturalism and transcendentalism in the current project of naturalizing phenomenology. This project usually takes the transcendental point of view to be in conflict with the naturalizing attitude and the contemporary sciences of cognition thus seem to require cutting Husserlian phenomenology from its anti-naturalist roots, i.e., natur...
متن کاملApplication of Frame Semantics to Teaching Seeing and Hearing Vocabulary to Iranian EFL Learners
A term in one language rarely has an absolute synonymous meaning in the same language; besides, it rarely has an equivalent meaning in an L2. English synonyms of seeing and hearing are particularly grammatically and semantically different. Frame semantics is a good tool for discovering differences between synonymous words in L2 and differences between supposed L1 and L2 equivalents. Vocabulary ...
متن کاملNaturalizing Information
Certain definitions of information can be seen to be compatible with each other if their relationships are properly understood as referring to different levels of organization in a subsumptive hierarchy. The resulting hierarchy, with thermodynamics subsuming information theory, and that in turn subsuming semiotics, amounts to a naturalizing of the information concept.
